I’ve talked before about my hatred of volunteering for things. I am always happy to help if asked. I really enjoy helping, but I don’t enjoy volunteering to help. I don’t know why – or what that says about me – but that is how I have always been. So, when I saw that there was an opportunity to volunteer for something at Zac’s school, I took it.

Actually, yesterday’s task started last week when Zac’s teacher sent home a volunteer sheet for the second-grade party yesterday which was a pizza lunch and fun field games. There were several options to help with the party – you know the check all that you are willing to do kind of forms. So I checked all of the boxes and left it up to them what they needed me to do. Maybe I would get off easy and just have to pick up the pizza?

I didn’t get off easy, but I got off fun. I was in charge of a field hockey game. Field hockey played with pool noodles and a giant beach ball. So, for about an hour and a half, I was yelling and screaming with second graders making sure that they had a great time trying to hit a giant beach ball with a pool noodle. And trying to make sure that they didn’t kill each other in the process. At times it was like herding cats, but I made sure that the kids had fun and that there were no injuries. And I ended up having a blast, though my throat is still sore from all of the yelling.

Takeaway:

I really need to be more willing to volunteer for things, especially at the boys’ schools. I mean seriously, look at that boy’s smile in the picture. How could I not love doing anything that is going to make him have a great time and light up with a smile like that? And he is still at the age when he loves to see me walking up. I need to take advantage of that while it lasts!
