So, I’m a little bit late to the blogging game. I realize this. But this isn’t really about building an audience, getting famous, or making money. This is just a chance for me to put some of my thoughts out there. Sure other people might see them, but this is really for me. I want to see my words here and have to read them and live with them – to have them hold me accountable. In short, I hope that this is a springboard for some change in my life.
It may not seem like I need a big change. I have an amazing wife who I love like crazy, two great boys, and I own my own business. My schedule is flexible so I get to take my boys to school in the morning and pick them up after school each day. We own a house that we like and there is always just enough. Things are pretty good. And things have been pretty good for a long time. The problem is that I have gotten way too comfortable with pretty good. And I don’t think that God is calling me to have a pretty good life. That’s not what I see written about in the Bible.
I have been feeling for quite some time that there was something off. For the last couple of years, I have known that I was putting way too much effort into being comfortable and way too little effort into growing. I stopped looking for any new opportunities and cut things out of my life that took effort. In short, I have been taking the easy way out with far too many things.
This has come to the forefront lately as I am watching my boys grow up. I see that when something difficult comes their way… they also take the easy way out. I don’t want that for them. I want them to work hard. I want them to be available to do whatever it is that God calls them to do. I want them to be persistent and tenacious, and to work as if they are working for the Lord. I want to put them in a place that they can succeed in life. Instead, I feel like too many of my habits are rubbing off on them and I do not want to be responsible for that.
I’m working on myself and hopefully, that will rub off on my boys. I want them to be proud of me. I want them to want to be like me. I want them to feel like anything is possible if they set their minds to it (and stay within God’s plan). But I have not been setting that kind of example and that is going to change. Right Now.
It’s not going to be easy. In fact, this whole project terrifies me. In the month of May, I am going to do a 30-day challenge where I do something uncomfortable every day (I know that May has 31 days in it, but I am going to take my birthday off of the challenge). After that, I don’t know where this blog will take me. I’m sure that I’ll write some about being a dad to boys. I’m sure I’ll write some about marriage and being a husband. I’ll write some about education. I’ll write some about fitness. These are all things that I am passionate about in one way or another.

[…] and dreading in equal amounts. I know I need to do this. I have known it for quite some time now. My life has become too comfortable and it is slowly killing my business and my relationships. Comfort has become an idol for me […]
This is way cool, Kurt. Seriously. If I can…Let me encourage you. It has been my experience that when we open ourselves up to this kind of refining, something sharper than we even realized swings away…and it stings a little more than we even thought we’d meant for ourselves….and we grow in ways we didn’t even know were lacking…it’s more awesome than we could have even hoped. 🙂
I’m cheering you on and will follow this closely. Thanks for courageously modeling the good stuff for all of us.
Thanks Sarah! I am terrified/excited to see what comes of this. I know it will probably go way deeper than I am expecting, but I’m (sort of) ready!
