Tonight was Luke’s middle school band concert. My task for tonight was to volunteer to help set up for the concert. Not that the actual setting up would be all that uncomfortable, but the volunteering. You see, I am always willing to help. At church, school, in groups that I’m in – if you ask for help I will almost always say yes and happily help. But if you are waiting for me to volunteer… you might be waiting a while. Not sure what it is about me that makes this true, but it’s how I’ve always been.
So for today, I emailed Luke’s band teacher, got the information and showed up to help. And it ended up being super easy and not at all uncomfortable. I was worried about what I would write in the blog for today, and then I got my answer.
For tonight, we had two things to do at once. Ann was taking Zac to the Awana awards and I took Luke to the concert. We thought that Luke’s band was going to be second, which would mean that Ann would have just enough time to get there. But we were misinformed and Luke’s band was up first. Luckily I had brought the camera and tripod to video the performance for Ann (it was a just in case thing that I didn’t think I’d actually have to do).
Unluckily, I hate videoing things like this – especially if it involves a tripod. I feel like I’m blocking other people or that I look ridiculous. All stupid reasons to hate doing something. So in the moment that I was setting up the tripod and feeling dumb, I thought, “Awesome. I have something for the blog tonight.” Then I thought, “Stop being stupid and video this for Ann and make sure she can see all of this. She will want to see Luke’s performance.” So I proudly sat there, tripod out in the aisle, videoing the show because I love my wife and she’s way more important to me than feeling comfortable is.
Takeaway:
It’s much easier not to be uncomfortable when you are doing something for someone that you love. And volunteering isn’t so bad. Maybe I should do it more often.

You should do it more often!! Yes.
I’m working on it!
