So, I am a much bigger wimp than I thought I was. I guess decades of being too comfortable will do that to you. Today was the first day of my 30-Day Comfort Bomb and I wanted to do something tough, but also meaningful. So I decided to fast all day. The rules were simple – nothing but water from the time I went to bed last night until the time that I go to bed tonight. And. It. Was. Hard.
I have done the 30 Hour Famine several times over the years while working with the youth at our church. I figured this would be pretty similar. It wasn’t. When you do the 30 Hour Famine, there is no food around, there are activities to keep you busy, and you can drink Gatorade. And that does not take into consideration the fact that you are around a bunch of other people that are going through the same thing. Encouragement in numbers and all that.
But, today I was alone. I work at home, so I was home alone most of the day. In a house full of yummy, delicious food. Yummy delicious food that no one would ever know if I ate. Thankfully the boys got home from school in the afternoon, but then I had to deal with them snacking. And to make it worse, Ann got held up in a meeting at work, so I ended up cooking dinner – twice.
I was making bacon mac – one of my specialties (I only have two – barbecued cheeseburgers are the other) and I totally screwed up. Grabbed the 1 cup instead of the 1/2 cup measuring cup, poured in the milk… and disaster. I totally blame it on the fog of hunger. Then I had to do it all over again. But I made it (or at least I am assuming I will – I’ll update later with any more shenanigans).
My takeaway from today – this is going to be hard. Especially the alone part. I would absolutely appreciate any prayers, comments here, encouragements on Facebook/Twitter, or anything else.
Update – 5/2
I did make it all the way. I even ended up running a couple miles with my friend David last night (though I’m not sure you could really call it running it was so slow). We try to run on Mondays and I kept having to cancel on him so I had promised that I wouldn’t back out. Of course, that was before I had decided to fast all day, but a promise is a promise. Special thanks to David for taking it easy on me.
And if you were wondering, I broke my fast this morning with… chocolate chip cookies.

Discipline at its finest. You’re already off to a great start. The first couple tasks are the hardest but it imagine after that the “discomfort” factor wains a bit. Hang in the Bud!
Thanks, Kevin! And I hope that the discomfort lessens a bit as the month goes on.
I believe in you! I’m sorry that the giant thing of cookies was open to torture you. No matter where I am, I’m in this all with you!
That means the world to me! Thank you sweets. Everything is better when I know you’ve got my back.
Wow, they say integrity is doing the right thing when no one is watching. Thank you for being a living example of that statement. You and your beautiful bride are waaaaaay too cute! #relationshipgoals #integrity #youreawesome #youinspire
Thank you Trisha! And yeah, Ann is pretty terrific.
I didn’t even think about the differences between this 30 hour fast the famines from back in the day…way to push off the blocks in your 30-day bomb! do you have a list of uncomfortableness that you are working off of? I don’t think I wanna see it….. you don’t need my discouragement NOR my pity but I’m interested in this whole concept
I have almost the whole month mapped out. I have a few spots to fill in, but I’m sure I’ll think of something good and uncomfortable. It seems that I’m getting better at thinking of uncomfortable things as I go, so the later part of the month may be brutal.
